Effective Spring 2024, any private lesson student who may be apprehensive and become upset (translation - if your child is a crier) about getting into the water, working with a new instructor or just the thought of swim lessons in general, is now required to initially enroll in the Intensive Swim Program before registering for any other lessons.
Parents are also required to remove themselves from their child’s line of sight (but not earshot) during the lessons, so as to not become a distraction to their student.
No exceptions.

Quite honestly, we are a swim school that is committed to getting every student water safe as quickly as possible. We don’t want either of us to waste each other’s time (not to mention the additional cost incurred with unnecessarily drawn out lessons).
We know what needs to be done in order to achieve water safety and any student who is crying while attending lessons just once or twice a week is not making any progress towards becoming water safe.
This might be an entirely new and scary situation for some of our younger and/or apprehensive students. If this is the case, our first goal is to acclimate your student to the new environment/instructor before all else. Throughout the years, we’ve realized the most effective way to do this is with repeated, daily interaction and practice.
The Intensive Swim Program allows the relationship and trust to build between student and instructor quickly. If your neurotypical child is crying, it shouldn’t last for longer than three or four days in the Intensive. Parents, you’ll also need to do your part and remove yourself out of your child’s line of sight (but not earshot) so as to not distract your student and exacerbate the situation. Your child is crying because they perceive their situation to be “dangerous” and want you to save them from it. The crying will continue if they see you, as they believe crying long enough will make you cave in and “rescue” them.
Trust us, your children are very smart and know what it takes to manipulate you to ”save” them. We see it time and time again.
Once the crying has subsided, then we’re off to the races and can begin the real work of learning how to swim!
We strive to accelerate your student’s swim journey and for those who need a little extra attention, the Intensive has been a game changer.
If your schedule is unable to accommodate the two-week Intensive, we kindly ask you to reach back out when your schedule allows for this commitment.

Our Parent and Me group classes do require a responsible adult to be in the water with the student during the entire lesson.
For all other lessons, we teach our students to be strong, independent swimmers and therefore do not allow parents to get in the water with their child.
If your child is apprehensive about getting into the water, we actually require mom and/or dad to remove themselves from the student’s line of sight (but not earshot), so as to not distract the student during class. Parents of crying children who remain visible to their child during the lesson only prolong their swimmer’s journey to water safety. Trust us, we have decades of experience and know what works.

We are now requiring any private lesson student who may be apprehensive of the water, a new instructor or new environment to enroll in the Intensive Swim Program prior to any other classes. For group lessons, the Monthly Package is our most economical option available. A Monthly Package provides the convenience of auto-billing every four weeks. All classes must be taken within the current billing cycle and do not roll over.
The Pack of Lessons can be used throughout the season and beyond. Please note that if specific scheduling is your main priority, we suggest booking a Pack of Lessons, as a Monthly Package only allows you to book lessons for the current 4-week billing cycle. For example, if your membership begins April 1, 2025, you will be able to book through April 28, 2025. Any bookings you’d like after April 28 and for the month of May will need to be made after your billing cycle completes on April 29, 2025. Our reservation calendar is first come, first served so another student could potentially book the time you reserved during the month of April in the month of May.
-
All monthly packages will auto-renew every 28 days, so if you’d like to keep lessons going, there’s nothing that needs to be done. If you’d like to cancel before then, we ask that you provide us 10 day notice prior to your next billing cycle. Cancellations must be requested by emailing alia@bubbleupswim.com.

Children need structure and boundaries to thrive. Day in and day out, our lessons are very consistent until our student masters the main component and is ready for their next challenge. This provides a sense of familiarity, structure and consistency for our students, which sets expectations and allows them to gain confidence and flourish. A typical lesson includes the following:
-activity to acclimate themselves to the pool water; younger students in our water exploration levels will include songs that incorporate water skills
-warm-up
-introduction/practice of swimming skills; includes multiple skills with every lesson
-cool down with water toys
Adult lessons begin with gaining comfort in breathing underwater and placing their head underwater. In our experience, we’ve noticed adults have more of a psychological component to learning to swim, rather than a physical limitation, so we address and focus on those concerns right off the bat. Once comfort is gained in the water, we follow a similar format to the children’s lessons.
-
Please bring your student to class ready to get in the water with their bathing suits/swim diaper on and towel ready for their exit. Students at our LA Fitness location may want to consider goggles.
For apprehensive students, consider bringing 1-2 small personal toys that can get wet that may help us distract your swimmer until they are able to acclimate to the environment. You may want to bring a change of dry clothes for after their lesson. Most facilities have a restroom for client use. If you decide to sunscreen your student at our outdoor facilities, please do so prior to arriving to class. We’ve literally had children slip through our hands due to too much sunscreen applied immediately before getting in the water. Also, consider that your child will be in the water a maximum of 30-minutes and this might be a great opportunity for them to get some immune boosting Vitamin D!
-
We understand not every swimmer may be able to commit to more than one or two lessons per week, however we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that frequency and consistency are the two major factors that play into the speed at which students learn how to swim. If any of the following apply, consider joining Bubble Up’s Intensive Swim Program for at least one session:
-your #1 priority is getting your student water safe
-your swimmer has regressed during the winter break
-you’d like to kickstart your swimmer’s swim season
-you have an upcoming trip around water
If your private lesson swimmer is apprehensive of the water, a new instructor or a new environment they will be required to initially enroll in the Intensive Swim Program, no exceptions.
-
Our reservation system is a first come, first served basis and slots are not opened up on the calendar until we coordinate with our students. If you don't see a time that works, reach out to us as we may be able to figure something out.
We do have a waitlist option available, however if your preferred time is consistently unavailable, please reach out to us directly. We may be able to switch some things around. We are also expanding and anticipate to add additional swim staff throughout the season so please continue to check back in with us. We are a small business dealing with similar challenges many in the service industry have been struggling with these past few years.

Nope! The only type of floatation device we recommend is a Coast Guard approved life jacket, and use should be VERY SPARINGLY and only when absolutely necessary (like when on a boat - not in the pool!).
Any other device, including, but not limited to inflatable water wings, "puddle jumpers", buoyant chest floaties and/or floatation devices built into a swimsuit provide nothing but a false sense of security for both the student and parent. We have seen firsthand students accustomed to these devices not realizing their limited capability when entering the water without their device on and immediately sink to the bottom of the pool, with a "deer in headlights look", not realizing what is happening.
These devices also add an additional level of hinderance, as they position the swimmer vertically in the drowning position, which is contrary to the horizontal body position needed for proper swim propulsion and skill progression.
Lastly, these devices restrict the swimmer's arm movement and cause a lot of extra attention (translation = more money spent on swim lessons) to address lack of mobility.
So yes, mom and dad, you're going to have to put the margarita down and get in the water with your child until they are water safe. ;)

Unless the chlorination is too much too handle, which may be the case for some at our LA Fitness indoor location, our thoughts are that there is a time and place for swimmers to wear goggles/swim caps and for students beginning their aquatic journey these may not really be necessary.
Our goal is to achieve water safety. In the event (heaven forbid) your student unexpectedly ends up in the water, say for example by falling off a boat, you want your swimmer to swim. Not to freak out because they don’t have their goggles/swim cap on and they suddenly can’t put their face in the water to make their way to safety. Students who wear goggles/swim caps consistently, can become dependent on them to the point that they do not know how to react in a situation in which they do not have these items on them. So for those at our outdoor locations, please, hold off on the goggles and swim caps. It’s one less thing to worry about! For those affected by the chlorine, we will try to have the student perform a portion of their lesson without goggles to avoid over-dependence on them.

We maintain a strict reschedule/cancellation policy and require a minimum 24 hour notice for any changes or cancellations. A $10 processing fee will be charged for every class change.
-
No refunds are offered after the first class. If you feel your instructor is not the right fit, you may request a new instructor, schedule permitting.
If you would like to cancel altogether, we will need to be notified immediately after the first class.
For every refund, a refund processing fee of $10, plus additional credit card processing fees (vary based on each transaction) will be charged.
If a package is being refunded, the cost of a single lesson will also be deducted from the final refund amount.
About Us
Bubble Up Swim School was founded out of the disconnect from what local franchise swim schools offer versus what students realistically need to learn to swim.
Our founder, Alia Syed, began her aquatic journey when she was three years old, eagerly jumping off the high dive at her local pool. A Lifeguard in Training (LIT) Program became available when she was ten, allowing her to volunteer and assist the Swim Instructors in teaching their classes. Every summer until she received her American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certifications was spent volunteering and honing in on her teaching skills.
She began teaching private lessons and would hear the same concern from parents: their frustration with the lack of progress and inconsistency of instruction at other swim schools. It was then that she decided to utilize her 25+ years experience teaching swim lessons, along with her degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies, and years managing aquatics programs and staff throughout the state of California to expand her one-woman swim school into what is now Bubble Up Swim School.
Our goal at Bubble Up Swim School is to get each and every client water safe as quickly and efficiently as possible and we’ve had much success in turning students who are scared of the water into those who love it just as much as we do.
